Colts gut roster, ‘not out of the woods by any means’

The changes keep on coming for the Colts. When the team released Peyton Manning, it was obvious that no NFL player is safe. It’s just the matter of the business.

Colts owner Jim Irsay and new general manager Ryan Grigson have made it very clear that they are in rebuilding mode.

First it was Manning, and the cuts continue. Linebacker Gary Brackett, tight-end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai, safety Melvin Bullitt and then there’s Curtis Painter.

“It’s always difficult to make these decisions which the nature of the salary cap requires,” Irsay said in a statement released by the team. “Their legacies with the Colts will be forever remembered by the organization, fans, and Indianapolis community. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

Friday evening, Grigson held a teleconference for the media to try and explain the moves.

“It’s a really tough deal, tough on all of us involved, especially Mr. Irsay…sometimes you’re forced to do these things and we hope fans understand.”

Asked whether injuries were a big reason for the moves, Grigson immediately dismissed the idea. “No, no, absolutely not.”

Once Irsay fired Bill and Chris Polian along with the coaching staff, his focus became long-term. I don’t know specifics on their financial problems, but I know they are hurting from the salary cap and these moves helped provide relief. Some. I also believe injuries did play a major part for Bullitt, Brackett and even Clark.

These changes will not rest easy for fans. Manning and not a long list of players. And it’s also highly doubtful that receivers Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon return. Today brought a whole new meaning to ‘blue friday.’

“It’s about the future of the franchise,” Grigson reassured. “This is going to help but we aren’t out of the woods by any means.”

Can you imagine what the locker room will be like when players return? I guarantee a lot introductions.

Jim Irsay PROMISED money was not the issue when he was on the stage firing Peyton. What a freaking LIAR!!!!! Why didn’t he just SELL the Colts and buy a BRAND NEW TEAM if that’s what he wanted? I think Grigson isn’t very bright. Way to go guys. Not the smartest tools in the shed now are you.
