Glenn Robinson III underwent left ankle surgery Friday

Glenn Robinson III underwent left ankle surgery Friday at Orthopedic Indiana Hospital. The surgery was to repair the medial and lateral ligaments in his left ankle stemming from an incident that happened during a scrimmage on Sept. 29.

Robinson III is expected to return in approximately three to four months, the team says. The surgery was performed by the Pacers’ medical staff, presumably team orthopedist Dr. Tim Hupfer.

“Surgery went well,” Robinson III wrote on multiple social media posts late Friday. “Thank you for holding me down. This is nothing … just wait.”

It’s the first serious injury of GRIII’s career.

Pacers head coach Nate McMillan announced on Thursday that additional tests two weeks later revealed the need for surgery.

“When the swelling went down and he was able to put a little bit more weight on it, they saw something a little different than initially thought,” he said. “He will have to go in and get this fixed.

“For him, it’s a disappointment because we initially thought that it was just a serious sprain and that surgery wouldn’t be required. And now he has to have surgery. Until they go in and fix that, they won’t really have a timeframe [to return]. He’s disappointed with that, and so are we. But it happens.”

Speaking one day after he crumbled to the floor in pain, Robinson III was optimistic because the early X-ray and MRI results were favorable.

“It looked pretty bad,” he said on Sept 30. “I’m glad that it was only mild. Nothing broke, nothing fractured or anything like that. It was good news.”

So, no fractures … but ultimately two ligaments were impacted.
