Mike Davis on coaching at IU: ‘That should be your last job, not your first job’

“That should be your last job, not your first job.”

Those are the words of former Indiana University basketball head coach Mike Davis, currently the lead man at Texas Southern. Davis was an assistant under Bob Knight from 1997-2001, and then Davis was named interim head coach on September 12, 2000 after coach Knight was dismissed by then IU President Myles Brand.

That comment and more appear in a preview posted by the Big Ten Network of what was discussed on “A Taste of Coaching,” a special scheduled to air at 9:30 p.m. ET Sunday on BTN.

Talking with former coach and basketball analyst Steve Lavin, Davis admitted that he “was too naive then to see it and understand. But now I look back and I get nervous.”

After going 21-13 in Year 1, the interim tag was removed and the following year, the Hoosiers reached the NCAA title game — losing to Maryland. Davis was put in a no-win situation and was constantly scrutinized.

“I was under the spotlight,” he said. “Every game, no matter what it was, who it was, we had to win. And not just win, but win by 20 points, which is impossible.

“… I’m at Texas Southern now. It should’ve been Texas Southern, UAB, Indiana. Not Indiana, UAB, and Texas Southern.”
