Larry Bird wears walking boot

Larry Bird wore a walking boot on his right foot and used a crutch as he left the floor area at Bankers Life Fieldhouse once the first practice of the 2016-17 season had concluded.

“Trying to figure that out,” Bird responded when asked about it by a reporter.

The Pacers’ President of Basketball Operations — his title since 2003 — observed practice at the scorer’s table, seated on a folding chair beside Carl Nicks, Manager of Player Development.

When Paul George was asked if he was aware of what happened to his boss, George replied, “I’m not sure. I don’t know. [smiles] He’s been looking good for 80 years, it’s catching up to him I guess.”

Bird, 59, did not show any signs of pain at a public appearance last week – the organization’s annual golf outing at Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. He posed for photos, signed some autographs, and spoke to three of us reporters before the event got started.
