Paul George earns first Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor since leg injury

Paul George has received his first of what should be many honors this season, his first year back from the compound fracture that cost him all but six games during the 2014-15 season.

On Monday, the NBA named the Pacers’ star Eastern Conference Player of the Week for his performances Monday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 29.

Over that time, George, who has been a finalist several weeks prior, averaged a conference-best 37.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game while leading the Pacers to wins over Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles (Lakers).

He scored at least 33 points in each of those games, and if not for a missed foul shot late in Sunday’s win over the Lakers, he wouldn’t tallied 40 points for the second time.

George has been spectacular this season, putting himself back in the conversation as being a top five player in The Association. He’s still defending the opponents’ best player, and he’s been efficient on offense — just look at the numbers: 54.7 percent from the floor, 57.1 percent from three-point land and 86.7 percent at the line.

This honor shouldn’t be George’s only one this week. He is most deserving of the Player of the Month honor in the East, as he helped the Pacers go 11-2 and move up to second — yes, second! — in the conference standings. He’s playing even better now than two years ago at this time when he won the award for his play in November, 2013.

Head coach Frank Vogel should win Coach of the Month as well.

The Pacers are currently out west, playing a four-game roadie with stops in Los Angeles, Portland, and Utah.
