Terran Petteway practices with Pacers, will join Mat Ants

When allowed into the final minutes of Pacers practice on Monday, I immediately searched around for the guys at the end of the roster knowing the team had to waive one player by the 5 p.m. deadline.

Toney Douglas. Shayne Whittington. Rakeem Christmas.

Yep. All there.

Terran Petteway out of Nebraska joined the Pacers for practice on Monday.

In the middle of mentally taking attendance, I noticed a new face dressed in Pacers garb who was taking part.

It was none other than Terran Petteway out of Nebraska. The 23-year-old wing passed up being a fifth-year senior — he transferred from Texas Tech after one season — to enter his name in the 2015 NBA Draft.

He was evaluated by the Pacers, even coming to Bankers Life Fieldhouse on May 28th for one of the team’s six pre-draft workouts. But draft night came and went without Petteway hearing his name called.

Petteway, who averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 reobunds, and 2.8 assists per game with the Cornhuskers last season, was with the Atlanta Hawks for Summer League and for training camp. He was waived by the Hawks on Oct. 22 after three preseason games (he averaged 1.7 points per game).

Petteway signed with the Pacers on Sunday, went through practice on Monday and then was waived.

By doing so, the Mad Ants, who are owned by the Pacers, have first right to sign him. That’s what so many training camp deals are for anymore — getting guys within their system and to their D-League affiliate.

The only question beyond that, is over what time scale the binary possibility is ready for.
