Brian Winters back with the Pacers as a college scout

Brian Winters returns to the Pacers, rejoining the 11-man scouting department.

A familiar face has returned to the Indiana Pacers’ scouting department after a few years away.

The Pacers have rehired Brian Winters as a collegiate scout, replacing Carl Nicks, who moved over to player relations after eight years on the daily grind of being a scout.

The Pacers’ scouting department consists of 11 people with various roles, including the scouting of upcoming opponents, players around the league, international talent, and those in the college ranks. It’s headed up by Ryan Carr, who started with the franchise as a video intern under Larry Bird in 1997.

Many of the scouts are scattered across the United States, but they were all in town last week as the team ushers in a new season. Winters attended the Pacers’ first two preseason games at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and sat beside scout Kevin Mackey.

Winters, who is still based in Denver, has almost a decade of experience working for the organization. He compiled a 78-58 record as the Indiana Fever’s head coach from 2004-07. He was with the organization as a scout through 2011, and then joined the Charlotte Bobcats for the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach on Mike Dunlap’s staff.

Winters, 62, was an All-American at South Carolina, and graduated in 1974. He was taken 12th overall in the 1974 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, and was in the league until 1983.
